White Flight is the solo project from Justin Roelofs, formerly of The Anniversary. Following the Anniversary's split in 2004, Justin went on a personal journey that found him drinking ayahuasca with Medicine Men deep in the rain forest on Peru. To make the record "White Flight", Justin re-immursed himself in the Kansas City suburbs where he grew up, recording nearly all of the instruments in the house next door to his childhood home. It was a culture shock between the old and the new, one's history and the liberated "now" that gives the music on "White Flight" its contagious immediacy and eerie edge. The moniker "White Flight" is meant to take the socio/political phenomenon and flip it, turning escape from the suburbs to the cities and the complex multicultural world into a cause for celebration. since the initial release of the record, as a download package from the Lawrence, Kansas based Range Life Records and vinyl-only B&G release, Justin has been living mainly in San Marcos, Guatamala, but is now residing in Hawaii for the remainder of the winter. "imagine early Beck, laced with heavier psychadelics, constructing a cut-up folkie/hip-hop montage with gentle acoustic guitars, hammering drum machines, winningly out-of-tune choruses, and new-wave synths. On paper it may sound like a willful, cliched mess, but from the lovely "Song of Augustine, Pt. 2" to the dope beats of "Deathands", it's an ADD delight." -SPIN MAGAZINE DEC 27, 2007
